비설거지, biseolgeoji, is what you do when rain is coming on: getting in, or covering over, whatever must not be rained on. Chillies off the mats. Washing off the line. Firewood under something. The word is for that scramble.
What is worth knowing is that in an old village it did not stop at your own yard. When a squall came over the ridge you pulled in the neighbour's washing first, and grain spread out in somebody else's field came in as if it were yours. Nobody needed to be home. Your hands went out ahead of you.
The sky went dark and the whole village started watching each other's yards.
By the time the first drops came the lines were bare and the mats were rolled. Everyone stood in their own doorway, out of breath, watching it come down.
