선들바람, seondeulbaram: a light cool wind. Not a gale, and not the barely-there stirring that has a word of its own again. The one in between, at exactly the strength anybody would want.
In a heatwave this is what the whole day gets spent waiting for. You have the window open at dusk, and at some point something cool crosses the back of your neck, and a sound comes out of you before you have decided to make one.
A fan cannot do it. What the fan has not got is the not knowing where it came from, and the not being able to keep it.
After 처서, the turning point in the old calendar when the heat is said to break, the same wind takes a second name — 건들바람, the one that blows in early autumn. Not yet. This evening, still waiting.
