볕뉘, byeotnwi, is sunlight that comes through a gap. The hand's breadth of it that gets in under the eaves, between leaves, between two buildings.

The word carries a second meaning. It also means the care or the help that reaches somebody who is standing in shade. Whoever made it had decided that a small warmth arriving from somewhere else looks exactly like light coming through a gap.

Which is about right. The help that came when things were hard was never large. A meal. One sentence. Somebody sitting still while you complained. A patch that size was enough to get a day through.

On the north side of the building there is a bench that catches the sun for about an hour, from eleven. In that hour it is never empty.
