Hard sun in the morning; by lunchtime a downpour had come through. Put the umbrella up and it stops. Fold it and it starts again.
건들장마, geondeuljangma, is the word for rain that behaves like this — the early-autumn rain that comes, clears, comes back, clears again. Not the summer monsoon parked over you for a week. This one is loose, on and off. 건들건들.
There is a stretch between the seasons where the days cannot commit either. Heat that will not quite leave, and a coolness pushing up underneath it, and the two of them changing places several times in an afternoon. The cicadas are still going in the daylight; after dark it is crickets.
처서 is in a few days. A few more of these and one morning the air will simply have changed.
