미리내, mirinae: the Milky Way. Not the standard word — that is 은하수, a river of silver, borrowed from Chinese — but what they called it on the island of Jeju.

미리 comes from 미르, an old Korean word for dragon. 내 is a stream. A dragon's stream, then; or a stream as long as a dragon. It is the water the two lovers of the old story cross once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh month.

English made it a road of spilt milk. Chinese made it a river of silver. Jeju made it a creek with something alive in it.

City light has taken it off most skies. Get up a mountain on a clear night and it is still there, still running.
